I'm going to stereotype here (let's stereotype!), but boy do I love a Scottish accent. It makes one think of good beer drinking buddies, who are easy to laugh and ready to listen.
Which is an apt way to approach Waxing Gibbous, the fifth solo album from Malcolm Middleton. His distinctly Scottish point of view dominates this collection of singer-songwriter storytelling. It's an album that's markedly varied and dynamic, at turns sad, funny, sweet, invigorating, heavy and enlightening.
Maybe it's his years spent as one half of hard-drinking, soft-spoken, sadcore indie faves Arab Strap, but there's definitely a sorrowful side to Middleton's tunes. Here though, he's finally able to get far more upbeat than the Strap ever did.
Along the lines of fellow Scottsman James Yorkston, Middleton makes music that's world-weary yet hopeful; smart and savvy, yet without the self-conscious cynicism common amongst their British neighbors to the South. Stoater!
