Soaring in the atmosphere of convention before hurtling to the ground in a fiery ball of experimental flame, Flamingo Crash have refined their dancey art-punk sound with the release of their debut album and managed to create a true spectacle of a record. After a couple of line-up changes within the past year and a full relocation to Melbourne, the band had every chance of fizzling out in the ether of musical failure, but testament to their determination and talent, the four-piece have produced an album simmering with punchy post-punk brilliance, complete with bounding time signatures, vivacious keyboard loops, smouldering rhythms and oh-so catchy melodies.
Despite the overall radiance of the record, there are moments of vulnerability scattered, albeit scarcely, throughout. In some instances, the sound seems to drag itself along the ground for a bit too long, and the presence of four previously released tracks out of the ten on the album may make some feel cheapened. However, the songs which drag at times more than make up for this as soon as they launch back into glorious aural calamity, and the astonishing composition and execution of the previously released tracks will please even the most discerning critic of originality.
