"I tend to think it's that I'm out of time, I'm racing against time. A lot of it's the fear of death too. I know I'm not going to be able to make records when I'm dead. I'm not dead right now so I want to make records, it's that simple really."

If punk wasn't already dead, then it definitely is now. Jay Reatard - Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr. - embodied a classic simplicity that is so often lost and confounded in music. And yet this pure quality seemingly confused and alienated as many people as it inspired.

So when the 29 year-old died in his Memphis home last week, it was more than just losing one of the decade's most prolific musicians. It was tragically losing a kid that just loved to make music, and took it more seriously than anything else.

Sure the raucous icon was fatally flawed, assaulting disruptive fans is probably the most extreme and recognised case in point. But his words beautifully sum up the artist's state of mind, most particularly his Pitchfork interview last year and the gorgeous documentary Waiting For Something. Much love Jay.
