General opinion within the Australian hip hop scene is that Aussie Hip Hop is about to really take off, both locally and internationally. But two factors behind the suppression of any music scene burgeoning are lack of accessibility and the absence of creativity. Luckily for hip hop, Brisbane's own Suckafish P Jones possesses the knack to craft catchy tunes while also testing the preconceived notions of what hip hop really is.
With the release of his debut CD, Mr Cloak & Dagger, Suckafish P has turned the urban scene on its head. The album is an invigorating mixture of grime, dubstep, crunk, dancehall, electronica, old-fashioned hip-hop, and a number of other related (and unrelated) genres and styles. And it's all seamlessly blended together across eight tracks of rhythmic, groove-ridden bliss.
Teaming up with equally talented MCs from the local scene and abroad, this self-produced experiment in beat music is a refreshing, much-needed shot of inspired musical creation that is sure to challenge listeners' minds and ears. What ultimately ensues is a worthy advocate for the reshaping of regular musical style and mode. His CD launch will take place on Friday, February 1 at Empire Hotel's Moon Bar, so be sure not to miss this rare home-grown musical r/evolution as it straddles the rarely tried line between convention and innovation.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
