I've always hated birds. Magpies always swoop me and Ibis always look at me funny. The only way I could like any bird was to imagine them as little Coles roast chickens running around. I never understood why people had them as pets, until now.
Waking up the other morning, after yet another big night on the slippery slide, I looked out my window - the sky was blue and there was no traffic to be heard. Yet another peaceful morning in Brisbane... or was it? The one thing I could hear (besides the ringing in my ears) was this little bird in the tree outside my window. Singing away to no one for no real reason, from what I could gather.
Shortly after managing to get my head together and in the upright postion, I felt compelled to look up the birds of Brisbane. Hence, birdsinmybackyard.net - the site features sound samples of any bird you can think of. A few of my personal suggestions to listen to include the Pied Butcherbird, Rose Robin, Noisy Miner, Creasted Pigeon (my favourite), or even read up on the Ibis or Magpie.
Next time you've got an hour or two to spare in the morning, have a listen to the birds, man. Or if you're too lazy to do that just jump on the birdsinmybackyard.net and play their sounds on repeat. It won't drive you crazy. I promise.
Oh and if you want to hear some 'real' music, I suggest a listen to Secret Birds or Butcher Birds; two of Brisbane's finest local bands. Chirp Chirp.
