Here's a little riddle for you. What do you get when you combine all the world's puppies and cupcakes and sunshine and smiles, with one creepy old man you found lurking at the park? Vintage birthday cards, that's what. Just like the best little golden books of the time, from the 30s-70s twee and saccharine ruled the shelves, wishing you and ‘mommy' and sister and ‘grandmommie' the happiest of days, while the seedy old man peeked up your skirt, gave you a wink, then told you to get back to the kitchen.
In the event of it being OUR BIRTHDAY(!), I searched far and wide to bring you the best supply of vintage birthday cards so you could appreciate this strange combination of cutesy/creepy/corny for yourself. The search did not go well. I soon realised there was really no one out there offering a decent centralised catalogue or gallery of vintage cards and their messages. So, good people, I decided to take matters into my own hands. From my own collection of about 500 vintage greeting cards (*tragic, yes), I sorted and I toiled and I scanned and I scanned; I cropped and I captioned and I uploaded and uploaded, all to bring you this.
So please go take a look. There's even links to where you can buy or browse the best vintage cards, or you can maybe even have one of mine, if you ask real nice. But probably not.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
