Noise gigs are fun. You rock up to a random warehouse, smash some drinks and then proceed to have your eardrums shredded like parmesan cheese by some guy running the sound of him playing a bassoon with a vacuum cleaner through 143 pedals.
Then it's back to work the next day where the sounds are somewhat less compelling: ringing ears mixed with your boss's annoying laugh as blows his vuvuzela as a hilarious joke...again. This is where FM3's Buddha Machines come into the equation. Buddha Machines are small music loop players that continuously play one of their built-in ambient loops to provide an otherworldly background noise for a room.
Utilitarian design is the order of the day with the inclusion of a volume control, pitch shifter, headphone jack, (which allows the Buddha Machine to be used as an drone instrument if you're that way inclined) cheap speaker and NOTHING ELSE.
The Buddha Machine is unlikely to lead to enlightenment but letting it's crackly warmth wash over you will definitely enlighten your mood.

FourThousand is a subcultural guide to Brisbane, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Brisbane writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence FourThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
