Some food joints will do anything to attract customers. Think 2-4-1 meal vouchers, flashing neon signs, minimum-wage teens dancing around in chicken suits...
New Woolloongabba arrival The Pearl Café, however, seems to be a strictly word-of-mouth affair. Nestled between a row of antique furniture shops, the cafe doesn’t even have signage. But given that spare tables here have become something of a rarity, they must be doing something right
And that something might just be the food. Owner Daniel Lewis (formerly of West End's The Gunshop Café fame) has created a unique menu of hearty, old fashion meals with a contemporary edge. Meat eaters can chose from dishes like smoked haddock soup, duck and beans on toast or the more substantial pork belly dish. Meanwhile vegetarians are well looked after with options such as eggplant stuffed with goats’ cheese, pine nuts, spinach and tomato.
The décor also offers a combination of old and new: the interior's traditionally austere brick walls have been brought to life with antique mirrors and trendy lighting. Or for those after some fresh air, the tables outside are perfectly placed for some afternoon people-watching. So giveaway the usual haunts for half a day and take the bus to Woolloongabba.
Prepare to cringe, but its true: The Pearl Cafe is a bit of a gem.
