From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is FourThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Brisbane. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@fourthousand.com.au
A bread lovin' friend of mine said to me not so long ago ‘once you go Leavain, you never go back'. It's true, all the way to the crusts and back. I sometimes find myself in a bit of a pickle if I haven't got a loaf of Leavain on hand - in which case I'll just make the sandwich sans the bread - some people say that's not a sandwich - but if you haven't had a sandwich on Leavain - you really haven't had a sandwich.
Last weekend was my lover's birthday. We had a Wii party followed by Welsh Lady ‘Death By Chocolate' cake - that's just how we like to party. I ordered the 17.5cm diameter - recommended to serve 12 people - we had 14 party-goers sick with chocolate lust on our living room floor - and there's still half the cake left in the fridge.
How can anyone fault them? They're sugary, icy cold, and compliment the very best alcoholic beverages. They're the perfect answer to the statements 'I'm hot' or 'I'm thirsty' or 'I'm a diabetic, I need more sugar.' In a perfect world they would sell them at restaurants and bars. Beer, wine, OJ, Slurpee.
So you got the cheap Jetstar flight to Japan and you ran wild on as many yen as your dollar could buy, but now you're home and wondering where you can get that authentic Japanese flavour? Sure the shabu-shabu will never be the same, but you can get the same beer you necked it down with so fondly right here in West End.
I once knew a girl who had never heard of a friand, let alone tasted one. ‘OMG,' I proclaimed, 'you're soo missing out.' Friands are like muffins only better. Almost a cross between cake and muffin, these dream cakes are super moist from their almond meal and egg white base (no flour here) - so as you can already begin to imagine, the friand is simply a superior baked good.
Winter time. Scone time. Admittedly, finding the perfect scone is hard. Your supermarket varieties taste of about the level of enthusiasm that went into pouring them out of the packet mix, while ‘brand name' bakeries often serve up small and disappointing fare - and, even when they do taste okay, they're so $1/mouthful-overpriced it's hard to enjoy them anyway.
Everyone familiar with the late ‘Hot Chocolate' shop in Paddington will empathise the loss of those amazing, life-changing milkshakes tenderly made with love by that choc-mad lady Anne.
But just when you thought it was all over... chocolate has found a new home! Anne has relocated her chocolate shop of wonders to the jazzy new Barracks complex on Petrie Terrace.
