From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is FourThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Brisbane. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@fourthousand.com.au
You've tried Queensland's tastiest pie, the meatiest pie, the crispiest pie, the fanciest pie and maybe even the vegan-friendliest pie? Now say hello to the fastest pie.
No more breaking highway pace when transit lunching between surf and city. Now that Goldstein's have launched the Gold Coast's first ever drive-through pie shop, you can get your pastry fix without even leaving the comfort of the car.
Finally, everyone's favourite I-wish-my-living-room-looked-like-this venue, The Troubadour, will be adding yet another homely touch, jaffles! We bet these toastie pieces of cheesey heaven will have you more content than being sandwiched in between one of the velvet couches. The types of jaffles on offer are yet to be decided upon, however we feel you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I grew up in a dry house. It wasn't that my parents were recovering alcoholics, just God-fearing squares. The closest thing we got to alcohol at Chistmas was a bottle of rose Maison (that shit isn't alcoholic by the way, Mum) or when the black sheep of the family, my vivacious Aunty Marg, would bring a plate of loaded rum balls to share.
Christmas Pudding definitely does not cut it on a hot summer's day. It's too dreary and wintery. Plus, too many dried fruits remind me of the apocalypse. Who wants that when you're trying to think of new beginnings? Alcohol infused Cherry Cake - now, that's a different story. This cake is the edible embodiment of Miranda July - sweet, cute looking, a little sinister.
So you got the cheap Jetstar flight to Japan and you ran wild on as many yen as your dollar could buy, but now you're home and wondering where you can get that authentic Japanese flavour? Sure the shabu-shabu will never be the same, but you can get the same beer you necked it down with so fondly right here in West End.
I feel like this entire article needs a disclaimer. The information you are about to receive needs to be cherished. May I introduce 'The Lock Up' - my favorite new Valley drinking hole. For those of you over the age of 21, The Lock Up resides in the space that used to be Tabu but is more 'classy'. The entrance can be easily recognised by the hand drawn yellow cardboard sign that is positioned out the front every night by The Lock Up's loving owner Clive.
Anyone who has ever travelled south to Melbourne, knows The Hi-Fi Bar, the celebrated home of many a great gig and one of Australia's legendary music venues. The type of place that on just about any night of the week you can walk into, see some great live music and have a beer with the band afterwards.
