There's a time and a place for classy restaurant minimalism: stark furnishings, hushed conversations, tinkling piano music. There's also a time and place for dining to be loud and proud!
One such place is Southbank's newest Turkish restaurant Mado. Enter and you'll be forgiven for thinking you've walked straight onto a Middle Eastern film set: pots, bellows and gramophones are among the elaborate array of contraptions lining the walls. Add a good dose of Turkish music and an assortment of colourful carpets and Brisbane may seem just a hazy memory.
But if you'd like a breather while you enjoy your baklava, you can opt for the scenic outdoor, riverside seating. Just avoid eye contact with the resident belly dancer as she rounds up punters for the dance floor.
If there's a dull moment in this exotic extravaganza, sadly, it's the food. While the serves were wholesome and generously portioned, they didn't quite trigger a taste bud crescendo. But, with this much going on, does it really matter?
