From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is FourThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Brisbane. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@fourthousand.com.au
Sometime I just have too many fresh a roma tomato, so I like to make my own a pasta sauce. Dolmio in a jar just don't a taste like home. My sauce, it's a got a heart, just like a Jesus.
Ingredients:
- 2-3 kg of tomatoes
- fresh basil
- 1-2 onions
- couple of garlic cloves
- herbs, salt and pepper to taste
- your choice of pasta and meat to accompany.
The only way I know how to eat a stale doughnut is fresh out of the microwave - a method that sucks because of the initial hot hot hot juggle, followed by a stale-again ending. Thanks Dad.
Freya Baska (Maja's little sister) recently invented Doughnut Toast. The single best ever way to put those $1 semi-stale supermarket doughnuts to excellent use.
So you're a dental student, you love to drink coffee and sit around chewing the fat with strangers. You ride a motorcycle and always keep a good book in your back pocket. But what do you do on your uni holidays? You set up a freelance barista service in ambiguous pop-up gallery spaces in the CBD, that's what you do.
When I was in the Czech Republic I was staying in this tiny town called Libcice. My friend was throwing a party in his garden and it was -10C outside. Needless to say he was an idiot, but just as I was about to tell him so, he offered me a glass of mulled wine. 12 glasses later I was sitting naked in a man(me)-made swimming pool in his backyard constructed using a branch for a shovel.
"I was free and clear. I was living the dream. I was stripped to the waist eating a block of cheese the size of a car battery." - George Costanza
There I was, living the dream, the day I had to taste-test 50 cheeses in a day as part of job training. I didn't sleep that night for fear of fright, I didn't even slip into one of those Danish Brie lucid hallucinations either.
A while ago Baileys was mainly sipped by sleeping grandpas. Cue entrance of an 'inter-sexual merman with female genitalia'and suddenly the creamy beverage has traded in grandpap to become the drink of choice for a bunch of insecure, post-pubescent smokers. Regardless, Baileys is still the best thing for the coming winter months.
Got a passion for the palate? Have a colourful bunch of friends? My friend Julia does and most would agree we're a pretty exotic bunch. But what we love more than each other is food - which made us rub our tummies with joy when Julia came up with this new spin on potluck, International Food Night.
