From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is FourThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Brisbane. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@fourthousand.com.au
In all the years I've been indulging my senses around South Bank, never have I come across this gem of a coffee shop just under the William Jolly. C'mon - it is a rather inconspicuous location. Birds Nest Coffee and Collectibles only opened three months ago, but their coffee is rumoured to be ruffling feathers already.
Kiss hug, kiss hug. I've been bitten by the love bug! Welcome to XOXO. This unpretentious seven week old hole in the wall café perched on Given Terrace could very well be seen as a blank canvas waiting to be painted. In fact, for all you art lovers out there, café owner Kelly is looking for artists to fill the cafe walls, displaying their pieces week by week - so give her a buzz.
According to a column in The New Yorker circa 1942 some retired Wall Street stock broker by the name Lemuel Benedict coined the origin of the eggs benny. Benedict wandered into the Waldorf Hotel one particularly hungover 1894 morning in hope of finding a cure for his distressed liver. He ordered buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon and a side of hollandaise.
Remember those novelty key rings that had your name and a special picture of a dolphin printed on them? Sorry, but no one cares about those anymore. Why? Because these days you can personalise just about anything. This has its pros and cons:
CON: Defensive driving is more difficult if you're up against a car with the number plate PL4YA.
Remember the days when we had to forage for our own beans, grind them with our bare hands then simmer them over an open flame just to get a caffeine hit? Neither do I - that was like four thousand years ago. Yes, the modern procedure may be less complicated (and less physical, thank God) but coffee drinking is still an art, albeit one where the context in which we sip often overrides the contents of our cup.
They say once you quit lookin' for something, it'll come and find you. That's what Sisco did for me. In the fine neighbourhood of Spring Hill (The Ill), tucked in between a run-of-the-mill Chinese joint and the best Japanese Restaurant in Brisbane, is a little café cooking up a super breakfast.
Huddled between one of Brisbane's busiest thoroughfares and one of Annerley's most uninspiring alleyways, Dudley Street Espresso and Collectables is a unique little café. Like the name suggests, this is the perfect spot for anyone who takes their macchiato with a side of retro, is into killing numerous birds with few stones, or simply thinks that pleasing two or more senses simultaneously (in this case sight and taste) is a nice way to spend an afternoon.
