You know West End's gone pop when coffee shops start sprouting on residential side streets. Then again, Black Star Coffee has always done things a little differently. These are the good-folk that gained fame for their West End markets stall and infamy for their dubious West End Park coffee shed - a locale which made you feel like your score was of a less legal kind.

Now in its own humble, Reverse Garbage ornamented abode, Black Star ticks all mandatory boxes to become your new favourite coffee stop. Vintage décor. Organic fair trade coffee. House roastery. Alternative music. Tattooed staff. Yep, that's a perfect five, buddy. And I haven't even mentioned how good the coffee tastes. Bold, aromatic, fresh! There's something about having your own roaster which gives a place automatic coffee cred, and gives you faith that you'll get the goods every time.

Perhaps what I like most is the ad hoc layout. Now I understand most of you won't see ‘communal' as a word of flattery, but it feels rather liberating to enjoy your coffee in a space rather than a zone. Whoa, now it's starting to sound like someone's overdosed on West End vibe. If that's the case, Black Star sucks and back to the high street I go...
