From morning to midnight and back again, EAT/DRINK is FourThousand's guide to cafes, bars and restaurants in Brisbane. We know the best coffee because we drink 20 a day (each), we know the good restaurants because we can't cook, and we'll tell you where to find hidden bars and other places that still let you smoke so that we can ask you for a cigarette when you get there. EAT/DRINK is as voracious as our appetites and a much better filter than our livers, which stopped working a long time ago. Email your EAT/DRINK suggestions to: talk@fourthousand.com.au
Finally, everyone's favourite I-wish-my-living-room-looked-like-this venue, The Troubadour, will be adding yet another homely touch, jaffles! We bet these toastie pieces of cheesey heaven will have you more content than being sandwiched in between one of the velvet couches. The types of jaffles on offer are yet to be decided upon, however we feel you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I feel like this entire article needs a disclaimer. The information you are about to receive needs to be cherished. May I introduce 'The Lock Up' - my favorite new Valley drinking hole. For those of you over the age of 21, The Lock Up resides in the space that used to be Tabu but is more 'classy'. The entrance can be easily recognised by the hand drawn yellow cardboard sign that is positioned out the front every night by The Lock Up's loving owner Clive.
Anyone who has ever travelled south to Melbourne, knows The Hi-Fi Bar, the celebrated home of many a great gig and one of Australia's legendary music venues. The type of place that on just about any night of the week you can walk into, see some great live music and have a beer with the band afterwards.
If you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain then Sky Room simply isn't for you. While its stylings are definitely more Jetsons-meets-Brady Bunch than copacabana, the cocktail menu sings a distinctly tiki tune. Either way, Sky Room is a blessed Valley retreat brought to you by the same people who delivered us The Bowery.
Formerly know as Jorge on George, Little Jumbo opened its trunk of fineries in March this year. The City is, as we all know, a little hit and miss when it comes to bars and nightlife. I guess it's really a matter of what tribe you like to roll with... but, just so you know - Little Jumbo has all the right measures for a good drinking hole.
Lazing by the river at Brisbane's Powerhouse is one of New Farms not-so-best-kept secrets. Must be the luring aromas wafting from level one's Bar Alto that are giving it away. Alto, meaning "middle" in Latin, should definitely be on the top of your to-do-list:
Entree: banyard quail saltimbocca with salad of pears, radicchio and balsamic.
As a one-time employee of the establishment I can say with confidence: Tongue & Groove is a gem of place. As laidback as it is vibrant, as trendy as it is grunge, this is definitely one of our city's coolest cafes. On weekend mornings it's a thriving community hub, positively bustling with locals out to grab breakfast and catch up.
