There is little doubt our once vibrant ghettos of Brisbane are under attack from the gentrification bug that has taken up residence in baby boomers’ psyche. Eateries are not immune and barely a day goes past when another boring restaurant pops up that more resembles the inside of an airport lounge then a place to chillax and fill one's belly.
While the FourThousand crew are currently involved in a jihad against the gentrification of our Brisbane ghettos, this week we took a break from our crusade to take a look at Anise in New Farm. Embrace our sell-outness (sic).
From its early conception as a freestyle wine bar, Anise still pulls the crowds for those who believe eating out is as much about the wine as it is about the food. It would be mean to describe Anise as a glorified hole in the wall, but at times when the place becomes busy you often feel like you're trapped in a mosh-pit of thirty-something yuppies.
If you like your food presented in an overly neat fashion and can handle being somewhere where the clientele resembles the set of Friends then Anise may be your cup of tea. But if its not and you find yourself dining there anyway then FouurThousand recommends you drink your weight in wine. It makes it all worth while.
