I'm so white. And gay.
So it will sound pretty ludicrous when I tell you about the dope beats and mad flow this Chicago duo gots. But from their name alone, you know The Cool Kids are that new hip hop act all us discerning listeners have been dreaming about: one you can love without a hint of irony or guilty pleasure.
Baltimore girlfriend/boyfriend duo Beach House have achieved an increasingly difficult feat; they've created a sound that is both instantly recognisable yet entirely new. Like a new buddy at a party you feellike you've known for years. Their second album, Devotion, combines the atmosphere of David Lynch's creepy small town Americana with the fifties girl groups on Quaaludes.
The problem with so much jazz and electronic music is its dry, cerebral nature. Translation: it could use a nice big pair of old-fashioned balls.
Aussie trio Pivot's sophomore release O Soundtrack My Heart (their first for hugely influential UK label Warp) has all the smarts of a chemistry professor, yet still swings big balls like a longshoreman.
What band could pull off an album with this stupid name and a really corny intergalactic "concept", complete with airline steward voice-overs and swooshing flight sound effects?
Not so surprisingly, the Dandies can. There's something about The Dandy Warhols' self-effacing nature, sense of humor and lack of affectation you just have to love.
In 1986, before headbangers were (ironically) hip, when camera crews were still a novelty worth cavorting drunkenly before, a dude from D.C. borrowed some gear from the local TV station where he worked and went down to the sports arena before the big Judas Priest show.
The rest is heavy metal history.
It's official - white is the new black.
After Black Mountain, Black Angels, Black Dice, Black Keys, and Blackety Blackety Black Black (they're HUGE in Oslo), now we're into whites: White Williams, White Rainbow, White Stripes, Barry White, and your new favourite band - White Rabbits.
Coming atcha from NYC via Columbia Missouri (which they deserted a short two years ago), White Rabbits wield catchy, urgent indie pop ala The Walkmen or French Kicks, but mix in some second-wave ska and tango tinges.
The American media only invented "the teenager" as recently as the '50s. Yet those melodramatic, erratic, sexy sexy young thangs have come to TOTALLY take over the world, gripping the global marketplace tighter than Britney's fist on a Chihuahua-laden fluffy pink handbag. OMG!!
Taking our continual fascination with and fetishisation of teenagers to laughable, logical extremes are Parisian trio The Teenagers.
