If you haven't heard the name Emma Rea yet, you soon will. This up-and-coming Brisbane designer has just launched Poetry: her first line for Spring/Summer 2008. Her unique designs are dark and brooding yet maintain a sense of femininity and delicacy with floating fabrics and quality organic construction.
Brisbane has its cool pants on again this week, with the launch of our third Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Fashion Week. The champagne is flowing, the glitterati are out in force - but don't let this put you off completely. Fashion Week is also serving up a side dish of sweet activities for us plebs as well.
There are a lot of talented designers coming out of Brisbane at the moment, but when it comes to jewellery, Chrissa Alexion is definitely ahead of the pack. All her pieces are handmade and designed to perfection, compiled from a mixture of modern and vintage beads, charms and fittings.
You'll find German cameo lockets, charming cluster bracelets and necklaces, beautiful swallow and dragonfly designs, and dozens of pairs of earrings.
South Bank is still a place many of us can't help but associate with our childhood. Expo 88, or those long hot summers at Kodak beach, all sticky-fingered from chocolate paddle pops and endless rainbow slurpees. Back then, the most impressive shop was the novelty candy store filled deliciously wall-to-wall with sugary treats (and this still exists, and is still, in its own right, amazing) but there's no denying that South Bank has come of age as an urban hub of fine dining and shopping.
Paris Hilton may have started - and ruined - the craze, but we can't deny that dressing up your pooch is (torturously) cute. Brisbane vendors Ooh La La Pet Wear have brought a bit of L.A. to the streets of Brisbane with their range of designer doggie outfits.
This includes decked-out fur-rimmed hoodies, singlets, baby doll dresses, and novelty tees, including tiny Manchester United jerseys for the Victoria-Beckham-courting type.
If you haven't discovered it yet, your life is about to change. Introducing, I Life Factory: a whole world of stuff you didn't realise how urgently you needed until you step inside its doors. Its quirky little goodies are so cheap they are practically free. $10 will get you bag-fulls of treasures (aka crap you don't really need), including cute Asian stationary, trinkets, jewellery, ornaments, homewares, clothing and accessories from as little as 30 cents each.
Original men's fashion designers are hard to come by in Brisbane, with most local talents favouring the arena of women's fashion and accessories. Understandably, we were both excited and relieved to discover friendly local duo Dave and Holly and their freshly-born brand thatwasyesterday.
The duo bring us a range of affordable, edgy streetwear for men; right now focusing on a collection of creative print tees, vests and jumpers that look and feel three times as expensive as they actually are (the quality fabrics used undoubtedly lend a hand here).
