My friend's girlfriend loves McKisko. He doesn't feel quite the same way... but then again he likes Soulja Boy. For more than just spite, I have to side with his better half on this issue, as this Brisbane songstress creates glorious lo-fi tales filled with everything you'd expect from a charming young lady who has just opened herself up to the world with the release of her debut album.
What:
Clean Up Australia Day
Where:
Everywhere trash and waste lay
When:
Sun Mar 01
How much:
Financially: nothing. Environmentally: everything
Description:
I know that every single one of you knows what Clean Up Australia Day is, so I won't bother spelling it out. If you feel even the slightest tinge of conscience, a sense of responsibility, a smidgen of compassion, then you will no doubt be pulling on your gloves, busting out your best dirty work clothes and heading to your nearest clean up area, or making your own effort to tidy up and beautify a slice of your home city.
What:
Of Montreal / The Ruby Suns
Where:
The Zoo, 711 Ann St, Fortitude Valley
When:
Wed Mar 04, doors 8pm
How much:
$45
Description:
After all this time waiting for the princes of glam-pop to ride into our fine land, Kevin Barnes and his troupe finally arrive with much pomp and splendour as they set about touring Australia in search of fair maidens and noble bards who will lend their majestic tunes an ear. However, don't expect lutes and mute cornets, rather fuzzy pop organ and rock and roll instruments all joining together in glorious verse and alluring refrain.
What:
Mogwai / Beaches
Where:
The Tivoli, 52 Costin St, Fortitude Valley
When:
Tue Mar 03, doors 7pm
How much:
$57
Description:
That brilliant Scottish post-rock sound hits our shores once again for a tour of atmospheric delight. Mogwai make some of the most mesmeric music possible, and it's hard not to fall into a catatonic state of bliss when listening, so if you plan on attending we advise you to set alarms or something similar to make sure you aren't left with your jaw on the floor, drooling uncontrollably, ears bleeding and eyes rolled into the back of your skull (yes, their music really does mess you up, but in the best possible way).
Is Damien DeRose a magician? Because he's certainly won me over with his magical tunes. Okay, that was lame, but it is 100% true. You honestly have to listen to the man who goes by the moniker Peasant. There are a lot of talented solo artists out there, but this guy takes the cake for the most exciting one of the lot in recent times, mainly due to his delightful voice and knack for penning gorgeous pop-folk tunes.
What:
Jolie Holland / The Smallgoods
Where:
The Troubadour, Level 1, 322 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley
When:
Fri Feb 27, from 8pm
How much:
$50
Description:
With the recently released The Living And The Dead, Texan-born songstress Jolie Holland will bedazzle Australian audiences yet again on her new tour. Full of intricate melody and harmony packaged into soulful folk-pop, Holland creates tales of tuneful reflection which will lull you into a fractured world of love won, love lost and the emotions that ride alongside.
What:
Fabrique 40
Where:
Rooftop Terrace, Brisbane Powerhouse, 119 Lamington St, New Farm

Free
Description:
The final Fabrique 40 event is this Friday, and boy oh boy have they lined up a great set of acts to end it with a bang. Japan's own Tenniscoats team up with German Gudrun Gut, and minimalist post-whatever cats The Deadnotes for an evening of soul-shifting tunes on the rooftop of the Powerhouse.
