I have a fear of literary anthologies. Just like a boardroom table full of strippers, there's always going to be some duds that make you feel queasy. Hence, I approached Voiceworks' new anthology The Words We Found with trepidation.
Voiceworks is a quarterly magazine produced for, and by, people under 25, and this year marks its 21st birthday.
Once when I was a Christian I found myself standing in a church pew behind an old lady who released a neat little fart. It was mid-hymn so no one except me and her knew what had passed. Like a pro, the lady gave no physical acknowledgement of her brazen act, and I remember thinking at the time how impressed I was with her nonchalance.
In the same way that Sesame Street trains kids to watch TV, MAD Magazine trained me to read comics: get a few quick jokes then move on. Other than Mandy Ord's excellent Rooftops I've never read a graphic novel in my life. Really. If I lived in Japan and had to read manga novels I'd kill myself (possibly in a Japanesy way like dressing up as a cutsy tear drop character then knifing kids coming out of a baseball game before running flat chat into an oncoming fugu).
One of my all time heroes is the illustrator Christopher Niemann. This talented American does all kinds of graphic-based work for loads of magazines and newspapers worldwide. You might best know his cartoony drawing of toothpaste lovingly embracing the bristles of a toothbrush (pictured).
A few months back Niemann started a curious blog over at NYTimes.
The step up from comic zinester to graphic novelist is so treacherous that many fear for their livelihoods. And, let’s face it, who’s going to waste potential Inspector Rex-watching time by frigging about trying to get trillions of drawings shaded just right, the details of which only the politest members of your extended family will fake an interest in? Not me, that’s for sure.
