Description:
You could be forgiven for thinking that an exhibition titled ‘Chick Chick Boom' was some kind of abstract artistic homage to that chick in Sydney who became famous for about two days too long last year. Fortunately for society at large, it's actually a new show at Joshua Levi Galleries dedicated to unearthing some of the best female emerging artists in Australia.

If you attended even just one of the many music festivals this summer you would have noticed something: film cameras are cool with the hip kids again. Personally I'm just not interested in ‘cool' if it's not fun, and I've realised that it's hard to find anything more fun or cool than having a retro film camera in your hand on long summer days.
I can't believe I've become "one of those people" who are actually talking about the Global Financial Crisis. But the other day I started wondering about poor artists. What happens when you give a poor artist a Global Financial Crisis? What are they going to do just eat Mi goreng forever or maybe just go and get all reactionary and invent a new genre of art called Recession Art which explains itself in a roundabout way as "taking shortcuts to express about today without investing in unuseful trallalla out of pertinence.
Oh, January. If nothing else, this is the month where boring interior design and ‘lifestyle' magazines become filled with smug articles about how to ‘start the year off on a good step' by ‘de-cluttering your home' and doing things like taking polaroids of your expensive designer high heels and glueing them on the front of shoe boxes as, you know, a ‘practical storage solution.
As clever as art people may be, it seems not many of them are clever enough to bother keeping their galleries open over the summer - which, coincidentally, is exactly when the general public usually feels like going to them. A friend visiting from interstate a few days ago did not believe me when I tried to convince her that yes, "we do have galleries in Brisbane, they're all just shut down for a few weeks.
Hey, just because you're in a band that Rolling Stone called one of the Top Ten Bands of 2008 doesn't mean you're not allowed to be amazing at art as well. Alex Knost is in the Japanese Motors who are playing a show at Alhambra this Friday night. But before that he has his very own art show at Nine Lives Gallery, which means you should go get some art into ya first and then everyone will walk together in one impressive human traffic jam to the show.
I feel pretty rude dissing 'zines' because it kinda goes against the whole philosophy of why zines are alright in the first place. I mean, obviously spontaneous expression, unbridled creativity, non-corporatization and photocopier meltdown means so much more than checking spelling or grammar or even just adhering to any kind of aesthetic principle at all.
