Hola Mexico Film Festival
If the closest you've ever come to Mexico is Taco Tuesday at the Alibi Room or spewing your guts up after one too many shots of Sierra Tequila. Then it's time us burrito loving, booze hounds got some real Mexicana culture courtesy of Dendy and the Hola Mexico Film Festival. Go loco on the thirteen feature films, ten of the best short Mexican films and a double feature of Mexican Grindhouse.
Double Snake Hollow
When sounds gets sciencey, don't think Bunsen burners and bubbling liquids; think Secret Birds. The band itself is an evolution of the facets of the Brisbane music scene (in layman's terms - lots of dudes from lots of other bands) - they have 4, sometimes 5, sometimes 6 members - and they don't say so much as boo.
Green Flea Community Market
It's not a scandal - it's true; the ‘fresh' produce from Woolworths ‘the fresh food people' ain't all that fresh. The last time I bit into a supermarket apple it tasted like a bag of bicarbonate soda. Honestly, what's the point of eating vegies if all the nutrients are left behind in the freezer where they were laid to rest after being picked fresh several months ago? It's time to take your green bags down to the riverbanks and fetch all your fruit and veg on Saturdays at West End's Green Flea markets.
Butter Beats
Butter Beats is a household name in this northern city of ours. Responsible for serving up the freshest in urban culture, collectables and quite obviously, beats... since the summer of '98. That's ten years this summer baby!
Butter Beats can be an intimidating store to walk into, if you're not all up and down with record knowledge.
QNFA Public Screenings and Awards Ceremony
‘Presentation Evening' That's what my school called its award ceremony. It was kind of novel ‘cause if you were smart and/or sporty (in my case both) then you got to have a day off school, go to the practise and watch everyone pretend-accept awards, all whilst eating lots of junk food like it was entertainment or something.
